Built over nearly 32 kanals of land, Shopian Fruit & Vegetable Market has emerged as a change agent and emancipator for the farmers and fruit growers of South Kashmir. The fruit and vegetable market of Shopian was inaugurated in 2006 by then Minister for Horticulture, Planning and Marketing, Abdul Aziz Zargar.
Shopian district, because of growing of famous Kashmiri apples, contributes significantly towards the economy of the State on account of its apple trade. Shopian fruit & vegetable market has not only been a prominent place for the growers and traders of the area to conduct their business but also has a creditable account in providing jobs to majority of unemployed and educated youth of the area.
Despite bottlenecks, district Shopian in the Kashmir Valley has produced a record 2.4 lakh metric ton of apples in 2010 having market value of Rs 750 crore. The Fruit & Vegetable Market Shopian has become a platform for this mass trade of apples, pears, cherries, apricots, plums, peaches and likewise.
Though change in weather and incessant rains from April 2014 onwards had its impact but the records suggest that exports from Shopian mandi are up and kicking both in volume and worth.
According to figures revealed by Department of Horticulture, Planning and Marketing, Jammu & Kashmir, in year 2014-2015, 53345 MT of apple dispatched in 3746200 boxes were exported from the mandi generating total turnover of Rs 177 Cr, an increase of around Rs 32 Cr as compared to last year when the turnover was Rs 145.36 Cr. As per the quantity in 2013-2014, 49452 MT were exported in 3159200 boxes.
Pertinently, every year, unsold apples are sent to cold storage located at Industrial Estate Lassipora at the end of the apple selling season which ensures the availability of apples in off-seasons as well.
From President's Desk
Thanking my fellows for electing me to the responsibility of President for Fruit & Vegetable Market Shopian. Your decision for electing me to this position clearly indicates the faith and trust you people have on me, and I assure you with all that I will render my services to the best ever possible way. Coming to the problems that our fruit market is presently suffering will be sorted out in timely manner. Whether it is relationship between a trader and grower or trader-trader relationship, wherein many defaulters in the past have tried to loot growers and other genuine traders and put the name of this market on stake, I will try to resolve those matters in the best ever way. The genuine demands of the traders and growers are always our priority. For every business concept a strong relationship is the major component and here at Shopian Fruit & Vegetable Market we develop people and people develop our business.
From the day Shopian mandi was inaugurated exports trade is blooming day by day, and since the production of goods in the area is limited to 4-5 months, which has put this market operational for half year basis. Although the production cannot be increased to two times a year but there are ways to import of goods from other parts of the country which will make this mandi operational for full year, and we are working on it.
As we are living in 21st century and this is the technological era. Limiting our trades within the country are the things of concern. We at Shopian mandi are looking for ways to convert this place into an international fruit market, wherein traders not only from other parts of India but also from outside the country will come and make deals with our traders. The concept of internalization will definitely speed up our economy which will contribute to the overall wealth of the state.
Similarly online trading is a need basis concept that we people are lacking, and we are looking up for options for the same. Online trading will help traders from outside state and country to trade over the internet, and traders from outside state and country will be updated about the current supplies and rates available at Shopian fruit & vegetable market.
For such concepts to implement on ground more and more educated and technical youth will be needed, which in turn will overcome the unemployment in area, and in turn will become a source for their families to live a standard lifestyle.
